Preterite vs imperfect in Spanish: when to use each past tense

B1Spanish has two simple past tenses and they work as a team. The imperfect paints the background (what was going on, what used to happen); the preterite tells the events that happened and finished. The picture below makes it visible.

Estaba durmiendo…
Estaba durmiendo…I was sleeping…
…cuando sonó el despertador.
…cuando sonó el despertador.…when the alarm clock rang.

La acción larga (imperfecto) y la que la corta (indefinido). The long action (imperfect) and the one that cuts it (preterite).

  • Caminaba por el Malecón cuando vi a Luis. I was walking along the Malecón when I saw Luis.
